The Cahn Fellowship is a nationally recognized leadership development organization preparing exceptional principals to lead high-need schools. Working closely with districts, charter networks, funders, national partners, and a powerful alumni network, Cahn plays a critical role in strengthening the national pipeline of school leaders.
As recruitment channels, district demand, and marketing conditions for principal talent shifted nationwide, Cahn partnered with NorthStar Education Partners to clarify its long-term direction and position the organization to lead through change—while protecting the quality, selectivity, and values that define the Fellowship.

Key Activities & Deliverables
NorthStar led a deeply collaborative planning process grounded in robust field engagement. The work elevated perspectives from Cahn’s board, staff, alumni, funders, and national partners and translated those insights into clear strategic choices.
Key deliverables included:
- A 2030 strategic vision and problem framing clarifying Cahn’s role in the evolving principal development landscape
- A defined set of strategic bets addressing cohort mix, recruitment and marketing channels, and district and charter partnerships
- Explicit from–to strategic choices and guardrails clarifying where Cahn will focus, differentiate, and say no
- A refined theory of change and program portfolio map linking offerings to leadership outcomes and field impact
- A multi-year growth and cohort planning framework translating strategy into annual targets and geographic focus
- A recruitment and marketing funnel framework aligned to changing talent pipelines and decision pathways
