Strategy that's thoughtful, rigorous, and human.
NorthStar specializes in strategic planning and financial sustainability for mission-driven organizations. Our work has crossed the social sector, supporting leaders who are expanding access, strengthening opportunity, and driving mobility.
We help leaders clarify direction, make disciplined choices, and build practical roadmaps that connect strategy to financial reality.
We partner with organizations across the social sector, nonprofits, foundations, universities, districts, charter networks, and state systems, from early-stage organizations with $500K budgets to national organizations such as Teach For America and KIPP operating at $100M+ scale.
Across more than 200 engagements, our work consistently lands on two outcomes our clients care about most: greater impact, and the financial sustainability to fund it for the long term.

Senior practitioners who've been in your chair.
We assemble a highly experienced team, strategists, financial modelers, former school and system leaders, and facilitators, tailored to each partnership. A few of the senior consultants you might work with:
Daniel Cordova

A national network
Former principals, district leaders, financial modelers, talent experts, and nonprofit executives, matched to your context and stage.
Two things set our work apart.
Financial sustainability, centered throughout
We don’t treat the financial model as an afterthought. Financial sustainability is worked through the whole process, across philanthropy, earned revenue, and public funding, so the plan is both ambitious and fundable.
Built with your people, through design sprints
We co-construct strategy with staff, board, and stakeholders through hands-on design sprints, bringing diverse perspectives and lived experience directly into the work, so the plan arrives with the alignment and buy-in to actually get implemented.
Rigorous analysis. Disciplined facilitation. Practical plans.
Actionable analysis
We pair deep knowledge of the sector with rigorous, actionable analysis, emerging trends, peer and comparative analysis, and macro and micro data, so partners move from intuition to evidence and see the few choices that matter most.
Disciplined, inclusive facilitation
We create structured spaces where real tradeoffs are addressed directly, and we’re adept at elevating every voice in the room, across differing perspectives and backgrounds. We manage the dynamics of power, difference, and productive conflict, guiding groups toward alignment without flattening what makes their input valuable.
Active stakeholder engagement
We bring staff, boards, and stakeholders into the work as active participants, not passive audiences, putting diverse perspectives and lived experience directly into strategy through design sprints.
End-to-end project management
We run the whole process so leaders can focus on the decisions, managing timelines, workstreams, communications, and stakeholder engagement from kickoff through launch, so nothing falls through the cracks.
Practical planning & capacity building
We translate vision into execution: clear goals, financial modeling, and tools leaders can use immediately, while strengthening internal capacity so teams leave more aligned and better equipped.
